Exporting Oilseeds, Meal and Oil

Export plays a significant role in the Australian Oilseeds Industry, with over a billion dollars exported annually of seeds, oil and meal; Canola and Cottonseed are the primary export oilseeds.

There are a number of AOF members who are involved in sourcing and exporting oilseeds, and in exporting crude and refined oil and meal.

In recent years, Europe has been the main destination for exports of Australian oilseeds, increasingly used in the production of biofuels.  This has resulted in the need for Australian oilseeds destined for the European biofuels market to be certified as sustainable.  For full details on the requirements for certifying canola for export to Europe for biofuel use see ISCC Certification.

There are a number of organisations which are involved in the sourcing and export of oilseeds, and in exporting crude and refined oil and meal. The major Australian exporters are listed below.

The Department of Agriculture, has developed a "Step-by-step guide to exporting plant and plant products" which should be consulted when considering the export of oilseeds and meal.

Most importing countries have specific phytosanitary requirements relating to seed and meal, and the Australian Government, through Biosecurity Australia (formally AQIS) provides the appropriate phytosanitary certification. Importing country requirements can be found in the MICoR database on the Department of Agriculture website.
